The Article “Canada has sent heavy artillery and ammunition to Ukraine'' reports on Canada's support of Ukraine and Canada’s stance towards Russia. When the invasion of Ukraine started, Prime minister Justin Trudeau promised to send heavy artillery to support Ukraine's fight against Russia. Since January, the government of Canada has committed $118 million worth of equipment and recently set aside another $500 million to fund military aid to Ukraine. “Canada has sent several M777 howitzers and ammunition from the Canadian Armed Forces,'' (www.ctvnews.ca) which, according to the Department of National Defense, can hit targets at a range of up to 30 kilometres. This lethal weapon was sent to Ukraine in response to a list of required equipment released by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Furthermore, the article mention’s Canada’s disapproval of the Russian attack and its stance on banning Russia from participating in the G20.
I believe that Canada is doing the right thing by sending weapons to support Ukraine. As mentioned by Alexandra Chyczij, “Ukraine is defending the freedom of Europe from Russia's genocidal war” (www.ctvnews.ca). If Canada wants to set an example as a democratic country, it has to support its ally, which is being attacked by a non-democratic country. Some argue that Canada should not spend so much of its money on foreign aid and instead should spend it on its people; However, I believe that this form of isolationism is a recipe for disaster. If Canada was to take an isolationist stance, similar to that of the USA during WWII, the world would face another world war as other aggressive nations would try to take over smaller countries. Another reason why Canada should help the fight against Russia is that Russia’s actions have directly affected the world economy, thus affecting the people of Canada. This is also the reason why many politicians are against having Russia partake in the G20. As mentioned by Freeland “Russia doesn't have a place at the table among countries trying to maintain prosperity when its illegal war in Ukraine has strained the global economy.” (www.ctvnews.ca). There are still counties, such as China, who side with Russia and argue against removing Russia from the G20. In any case, I am happy that Canada is standing firm in its stance against Russia, as stated in the article: “Canada won't be a part of any meeting where Russia is taking part." (www.ctvnews.ca)
The actions that Canada is taking to support Ukraine should be commended, as the situation in Ukraine is affecting every corner of the world.
