Canada to host Iran for men's soccer friendly in Vancouver in June

On June 5, 2022, Canada will host Iran in men’s soccer for a friendly match. The match will take place in Vancouver's B.C Place Stadium, and will help both Canada and Iran prepare for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in November 2022. During the world cup, Canada will play in Group F against Belgium, Croatia and Morocco. On the other hand, Iran will play in the B Group and will compete against England, the U.S. and a European. John Herdman, Head coach of the Canadian National soccer team, states that he will “ look to take the team to Europe in the fall to play several more matches to prepare for Qatar.” (www.cbc.ca) For now, The upcoming friendly games will be crucial in preparing the Canadian National soccer team for their first match on November 23 “ against No. 2 Belgium'' (www.cbc.ca) and Morocco.

The Iran Vs Canada game is exciting for me and the rest of the Iranian community in Vancouver. It is very rare for Iran’s National team to play in Vancouver, and as Vancouver has a large Iranian community, the tickets for the game sold out quickly. This game is also a good glimpse at what the FIFA 2026 World Cup might look like, as “Vancouver is officially in the running to host men's FIFA 2026 World Cup games” (www.cbc.ca). Most importantly, the friendly match is good competition for both teams as Iran will be playing against the U.S in Qatar, which plays similarly to Canada. By playing against Canada, Iran can gain valuable experience against a North American team, and Canada can prepare for their game against Morocco, as Iran’s strategies resemble Morocco’s. I am looking forward to this match and hope that political conflicts do not get in the way.
